2011 TOCA Communications Contest Judges
We thank our esteemed group of judges for examining more than 300 entries
in this year's TOCA Communications Contest.
Jim Bauer, Minneapolis, MN, Penton Media, Inc.
Jim Bauer is currently the associate art director for BEEF and National
Hog Farmer magazines, two business-to-business agricultural publications
based in Minneapolis, MN. His background includes 12 years in the magazine
graphics field. Jim worked for McGraw-Hill Healthcare publications as an
art director for three of those years. His specialty is in color correction
techniques and Photoshop effects. Jim attended Century College and the University
of Minnesota. He is a St. Paul, Minnesota native.
Bruce Benildt, Port Richey, FL
Bruce is a communications coach and public relations specialist, helping
people give clear and compelling presentations and interviews. Before starting
his own business in 2001, he was a daily newspaper reporter for a dozen
years, worked for Shandwick in public relations for a dozen years, the last
as global chief learning officer, and has taught college journalism full-time
or adjunct for more than 20 years. He has written and edited several books,
and is a partner in a communications blog, thesamerowdycrowd.com.
Cynthia Clanton, Minneapolis, MN, Colle+McVoy
Cynthia Clanton manages technical writing, custom publications and agribusiness
accounts for Exponent Public Relations/Colle+McVoy, Minneapolis, Minn. Her
career has evolved around agribusiness, including positions at Hormel Foods,
the Livestock Conservation Institute and on the editorial staff of National
Hog Farmer magazine for eight years. She has worked in integrated marketing
communications at Colle+McVoy since 1993.
Leslie Delzell, Duluth, MN, Cirrus Aircraft
Leslie Delzell is a graphic designer at Cirrus Aircraft and freelances
for Project EverGreen and other companies. Her work for Cirrus Aircraft
includes print design, web graphics, large scale tradeshow graphics, and
logo design. Leslie has a BS in Business Marketing from Western Carolina
University and an AS in Graphic Design from the Art Institutes International
Minnesota.
Mary Fox, Minneapolis, MN, Penton Media
Mary Fox is a marketing coordinator for Penton Media. She is responsible
for developing marketing and promotional pieces for various trade shows
and Penton's agricultural-based print publications. She has been with Penton
for 3 years. Previous to that, she had worked as an art director for several
companies including; MHC Associates, BCE and Gelco Payment Systems. In addition,
Mary has worked as a freelance graphic artist for the past 22 years.
Lynn Grooms, Mt. Horeb, WI, Turf News
Lynn Grooms, Mt. Horeb, Wis., is an independent writer with more than
25 years of experience in journalism and marketing communications. She is
managing editor of Turfgrass Producers International's Turf News
and Business Management newsletter. She also is a contributing editor
for Farm Industry News and the North American Equipment Dealers Association's
Equipment Dealer magazine. Her articles have appeared in several
agricultural trade magazines.
Jill Lazur, Duluth, MN, Cirrus Aircraft
Jill Lazur is senior graphic designer at Cirrus Aircraft, a manufacturer
of four seat piston aircraft in Duluth, MN. With more then10 years in the
industry, she leads the marketing design team who provide web, print, tradeshow,
and product designs globally. Jill has a BFA with concentration in Graphic
Design from The University of North Dakota and a Computer Design Technology
Diploma from The Art Institute of Seattle.
Jennifer Morrill, Silver Spring, MD, American Farmland Trust
As director of media relations, Jennifer Morrill develops and implements
strategic communications plans, serves as the primary press liaison for
AFT, and works on AFT's farm policy, Agriculture & Environment and Growing
Local campaigns. Previously, she served as the director of communications
at the Farm Credit Council and the U.S. Grains Council, where she established
new communications approaches, managed media strategy, was responsible for
major projects such as the U.S. Grains Council's international name change,
and produced a number of award-winning publications. She is a graduate of
Cornell University and holds a master's degree in public communication from
the American University.
Lee Nelson, Corcoran, MN, Lee Nelson Communications
Lee Nelson's experience includes managerial positions in public relations
and publications with Northern Natural Gas, Multifoods, Bill Dorn Associates
and Merrill Corporation for more than five decades. Currently, he owns his
own writing and editing company. Nelson served in the Air Force and was
sports editor of a small daily newspaper. He is a journalism graduate of
the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Harlen Persinger, Milwaukee, WI
Harlen Persinger is a freelance photojournalist based in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, who covers multi agriculture assignments around the globe. He
not only has an eye for capturing the right photo moment, but he's also
a creative and talented writer. Harlen has been a member of the American
Agricultural Editor's Association for 36 years and was selected as AAEA
Photographer of the Year in 2000, 2005 and 2008.
Heather Rossow, Minneapolis, MN, Penton Media
Heather Rossow is a marketing coordinator for the agricultural based
magazines; BEEF, National Hog Farmer, Hay & Forage Grower, Farm Industry
News and Corn & Soybean Digest . She works closely with staff
to create relevant marketing and selling materials and is responsible for
development and production of the publications annual media kits. She also
directs all PR, tradeshow coordination and assists with digital media support.
Rossow graduated with a bachelor's in communication studies from Gustavus
Adolphus College St. Peter, MN
Bob Rumpza, Eden Prairie, MN, Rumpza Consulting, LLC
Bob Rumpza is president of Rumpza Consulting, a communications firm
specializing in effective messaging for companies, products and non-profit
organizations. His experience as a communications professional embodies
several specialty areas: Marketing public relations for dozens of products
and services, strategic communications planning, employee/internal communications
and crisis communications.
In addition to his 3-plus years running his own business, experience
includes three years in integrated marketing communications agency Nicholson
Kovac (Senior Vice President, Public Relations), 17 years at global public
relations firm Weber Shandwick (Executive Vice President of Corporate Relations),
corporate positions at Control Data, Pillsbury and Green Giant, and work
in a non-profit organization. His PR clients in the green industry have
included Toro, Lawn-Boy and Syngenta.
Paul Queck, Indianapolis, Ind., Freelance Writer
Paul Queck is a freelance writer with more than 30 years of writing,
editing and public relations experience. Queck was a writer, editor and
executive editor for more than 20 years with Farm Progress Publications,
a unit of the American Broadcasting Company and later the Walt Disney Company.
Since 2000, he has written extensively as a public relations executive and
more recently as a freelancer. Queck is past president of the American Agricultural
Editors' Association and a past president of the International Federation
of Agricultural Journalists.
Cyndie Shearing Sirekis, Washington, DC, American Farm Bureau Federation
Cyndie Shearing Sirekis has been a Director of News Services at the
American Farm Bureau Federation since 2003. She edits Foodie News
and Food & Farm Facts, in addition to drafting executive speeches/commentaries,
coordinating various national public relations activities and responding
to media inquiries. Cyndie has her bachelor's in communication with a concentration
in animal science from Cornell University. She hails from a western New
York dairy farm family and currently lives in Virginia. In her spare time
she is a Cub Scout leader.
Larry Teien, Bloomington, MN, Retired
Larry Teien has 45 years of public relations experience in agribusiness
and high tech for agencies and corporations. He specialized in editing,
photojournalism, planning, crisis communications, media relations, and special
events. Teien was president of the Minnesota PRSA chapter, won a PRSA Silver
Anvil and other top awards, and taught accreditation classes 20 years. A
third-generation newsman, he taught graduate school public relations classes

Krista Trempe, Minneapolis, MN, Penton Media, Inc.
Krista Trempe is the art director of BEEF and National Hog
Farmer magazines, two leading agricultural publications based in Minneapolis,
MN. Previously she worked at various book publishing companies in the Twin
Cities. She has won numerous awards for graphic design from the Livestock
Publications Council and the American Agricultural Editors' Association.
She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Lynn Varpness, Minneapolis, MN, Penton Media, Inc.
Lynn Varpness is senior art director of Farm Industry News, an
agricultural publication based in Minneapolis, Minn. Farm Industry News
covers new products, new technology and farm inputs purchased by high-income,
high-acreage growers in the 12 Midwestern states. She graduated Phi Beta
Kappa from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. She has won numerous
awards for graphic design from American Society of Business Publication
Editors, Minnesota Magazine and Publication Association and American
Agricultural Editors' Association.
McIntyre Selected as
2011 TOCA Scholarship Winner
Anna McIntyre, a sophomore at the University of Georgia, is the 2011
recipient of the TOCA Scholarship Program. The program is supported by Golf
Course Management, M2Media 360, Total Landscape Care, GIE Media, Inc., and
Questex.
McIntyre is majoring in ag communications and education, with a minor
in horticulture. Her current GPA is 3.73. Her career goals are to work in
public policy, be an educator and ultimately own her own greenhouse and
landscape business.
The selection is done by a committee of TOCA members. There were five
candidates this year.
Faculty member Richard Hudson calls McIntyre "bright, poised, articulate,
well-organized, personable, affable, clever, committed to learning, task
oriented and one on whom others can rely."
McIntyre says the scholarship will allow her to make a life long contribution
to the industry. "I will never forget the role this esteemed scholarship
played in enabling me to pursue my dreams."
Anthony Williams named
Environmental Communicator of the Year
Anthony Williams, director of grounds for Stone Mountain Golf Club in
Stone Mountain, GA, has been named the 2011 TOCA Environmental Communicator
of the Year. The program is sponsored by Project EverGreen.
Williams is the 13th recipient of this award, which selects a Green Industry
communicator for "outstanding efforts in communicating the benefits
of environmental stewardship to a particular audience within the turf and
ornamental industry."
"Anthony's body of work in the golf industry regarding environmental
communications has been exceptional," said Den Gardner, TOCA executive
director. "His stewardship efforts at Stone Mountain and activities
throughout the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and its
Environmental Institute for Golf speak of his dedication to the industry
and the environment."
Williams said it is an honor to be chosen as the TOCA Environmental Communicator
of the Year and join such an accomplished group of previous winners. "It
is a milestone that is both humbling and motivating as I hold such admiration
for the individuals and organizations that sponsor and support this award
and the mission it represents," he said. "To my mentors, peers
and family, thank you all for helping me learn, teach and live the values
of environmental stewardship."
